My husband and I are planning to travel the next 6 months with a touring bike through SEA, Central Asia, Eastern Europe starting from Bangkok.
Does somebody knows where we could get 2nd hand touring bikes with or without equipments?
We are in Bangkok now and already visited more than 6 bike shops (ProBike, WorldBike, TCA, Sport Bicycle, Bikezone, Saeng Thong, Siam Bike, etc.), where we only can find mtb and 1-2 touring bikes. Unfortunately the touring bikes in these shops are all too expensive for us, so we hope we can get them 2nd hand.
our favourits are:
Trek 7.5 FX or of course Trek 520[/li][/ulist]
Maybe someone can help?

I suggest you get in touch with a local bicycling cub. They might know somebody with a touring bike for sale.

The Trek 520 costs US $1,400 brand new. Fuji bicycles also makes a touring bike and it lists for US$1,000. So the Fuji a cheaper alternative to the 520

Hi Mel and Stef,
Did a bit more research. There is a brand called Surly that manufactures a touring bicycle called the Long Haul Trucker. It seems to be possible to buy just a frame or a complete bicycle.

The thai distributor is:

The other option might be to order from abroad. I found a mail-order company that offers their own touring bicycle. The cheapest touring bike is about $800. I don't know how much it will cost to ship from the UK to Thailand.
Hey guys, thank you soo much for your help. Fujibikes or surly frame sounds like a Plan to us. We will go to the shops and have a Look. We let you know, how we gonna choose. ;o) Mel

Another idea that occurred to me is that there might be custom frame builders in Thailand. If you have time, you can get a custom frame made.
In the Philippines, a custom frame made from cromoly steel is about $400. If ordinary steel tubes are used, the price becomes very low. I guess prices in Thailand will be similar.

Try Velo Thailand in Samsen Soi 2. It's a great little shop with lots of Trek models. The owner, Ae, is a really great and helpful guy.

An option would be to order a frame and ship to Thailand. It should be much cheaper to ship just a frame. Than assemble the bike in Thailand.
