THAILAND TO LUANG PRABANG BY BOAT
We will be traveling this summer in thailand/laos with kids, age 13 and 16, and are looking for a safe somwehat comforatble boat to Luang Prabang from Chiang Khong or Chiang Saen. The speedboats sound dangerous and the slow boats uncomfortable. Anything in between? thx

I did the slow boat last year and they are pretty uncomfortable but you can buy some cushions that will ease the numbness of you bum!
I recently read an article from Barbra who did the trip but with a different tour company. Here is her link which might give you a bit more information. http://www.holeinthedonut.com/2011/04/24/mekong-river-cruise-thailand-laos/

The Luang Say luxury boat as mentioned in the above link is described on http://www.asian-oasis.com/luang-say-cruise and cost is USD465-573 per person (low/high season). Also look up info on the Nagi of Mekong boat http://sites.google.com/site/nagiofmekong which costs 4200-4800 baht (about $140-160).
The standard "slow boat" costs about 200,000 Lao Kip ($25) and can be quite crowded or not so bad depending on time of year and your degree of good luck. Use your imagination. But if you want some kind of "guarantee" about spaciousness and a less cattle-like experience consider the more expensive boat options. A lot of firsthand experience about the Nagi boat has been written up here on Travelfish http://www.travelfish.org/board/post/laos/5346_nagi-of-mekong-to-luang-prabang
