Cheap way to get from Australia to Thailand

Posted by shirasam on 23/6/2011 at 04:07

Planning a 6-month trip next year to Australia and SEA from NYC. We tried using miles to get from NYC to Australia, but no luck. Those tickets on miles need to be booked 11 months in advance. So we will probably use the miles to fly from NYC to Singapore, then have to purchase tickets from Singapore to Australia.
Planning 3-4 weeks in Australia in January, we want to see Sydney and drive up the coast. Then after Australia we want to hit the western beaches in Thailand - Phi Phi, Krabi, etc.
Need help determing the cheapest way to get from Singapore to Australia (where should we fly into, best cheap airline, etc.) and then the best way to go from Australia to the Thai islands (where should we depart from, should we fly straight to Phuket and go from there?)

Thanks for the advice!

I don't have specific answers for you - but suggest that you check out Air Asia, Jetstar and Pacific Blue websites for budget flights. On Air Asia, you will probably need to make your way from Singapore to KL first (about 5 hrs bus ride I think, or fly), then from KL to certain cities in Aust. Jetstar flies from Singapore.

Also checkout Pacific Blue for flights from Singapore to Aust.

Use this site to do initial searches as its quicker: http://www.airasiaplus.com/ - and there is a similar Jetstar link at the bottom.

To fly from Aust to Phuket, you will probably also have to go through KL - but check the sites to confirm.

Tiger Airways fly pretty cheap from Australia to Singapore, so I assume they would be pretty cheap from Singapore to Australia.
From Sydney to Melbourne you can fly directly to Phuket, with JetStar, they're quite cheap, we booked return Melbourne-Bangkok for $733, for September.
Also a great website for booking, and looking at flights is www.expedia.com.au

Jetstar or AirAsia will get you Singapore - Bali for $70 if you're flexible on dates then AirAsia will fly you Bali - Perth for another $100.

The cheapest route from Phuket to Sydney, Aus or vice versa I've ever seen is with Jetstar, and those prices fluctuate quite a bit depending on when you go. Wednesdays typically are the cheapest, and the lowest price I've ever seen them offer is $299 aud, if you're happy to book for their sale period.

Tiger used to be pretty cheap too, but they never flew to Sydney (my home) and are in a little hot water now as I understand it.
