Me and my girlfiriend will be in Chiang Dao in January and will likely be heading to Chiang Rai after that. We wanted to take the slow boat from Thaton to Chiang Rai, but is there a bus that takes you from Chiang Dao to Thaton?

Many buses run between Chiang Mai and Fang stopping at Chiang Dao on the way. Jump on then grab a songthaew to Thaton another 25km from Fang. Thaton's a nice place to stay one day/night and the boats leave for Chiang Rai at 12:30

DO NOT MISS WAT THATON!!! One of the most unique temples I've visited in Thailand. Make sure you make it all the way to the top. Like usual, Bob's spot on with his advice. For a unique trip, try Doi Mae Salong, quite easy to get to from Thaton. The boat stop is right by the bridge, can't miss it. Well signposted in English. Enjoy, we can't wait to do that boat trip!

Yep get up the hill at Thaton to the different "levels of heaven" right to the top. Walking allow a good half-day (bring drinking water!) or with a motorbike maybe a couple hours. Some accommodation options and scenery here:
