If you want to catch the train down best book quick http://www.thairailticket.com/ couldn't get any overnight sleepers between xmas/new years from the station yesterday but there's a few come up online today.

arundown, you and about 20,000 other partiers are heading down to KPG for NYE (Had Rin is insane for this period) so have a strategy for getting transport from Bangkok to Surat Thani and get going a few days in advance for better prospects of a train/bus (and a place to stay on the island). As others have recommended book train online or if that fails get to the southern bus terminal in Bangkok the day you want to go and take any sleeper bus available. Bus/van/songthaew and ferry connections are relatively easy to the island once you're in Surat Thani (Phunphin district) down south.
