Hi there,
We're in Ayutthaya and just purchased two first class sleeper a/c tickets from Ayutthaya to Sisaket, leaving later on tonight (arriving in Sisaket at around 6 am). We paid roughly 2250 baht for the two of us - that's roughly $72.00 for both / $36.00 for each of us.
This seemed awfully expensive to me; is this fare right? I asked about how much a second class sleeper would be (the ticket agent said there wouldn't be much difference, just a little less room) and that was only about 100 baht cheaper. Were these tickets expensive because it's same-day travel, or...?
Can anyone let me know where (if?) I went wrong here? Any insight is much appreciated.
Thank you!

Sounds like they sold you a 1st class sleeper (private compartment for two people). The standard fare for this Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani is 1180 baht, so from Ayuthaya to Sisaket should be about 200 baht less (980b) but agents usually tack on 100b per ticket, so the fair price would be around 1080b. You paid 1125b each so yeah that's still ok. Of course you could have gone with 2nd class air for about 700b or 2nd class fan about 500b. The agent sold you the most expensive option plus their commission. Next time buy directly at the train station or check online at the links given below, where the prices are clearly posted.

Thanks, you two!

Captain Bob, you're right on - it was a private cabin for two people. Don't get me wrong, it was downright luxurious, but we would have been fine with a 2nd class sleeper/fan option. Funny thing is, we actually did buy these tickets directly at the train station, so I'm not sure why it was so high...?
Thanks again for your responses and hello from Siem Reap!
