we are trying to travel from a. to p. and on to sukkhothai on saturday morning. there seems to be only one morning train at 8:11 am. do they operate on saturdays by the same timetable as during the week /are there any other morning connections such as bus?

Probably too late to answer this as it is 3:00 am in Thailand. There should be several buses going to Phitsanulok from Ayuthaya. If you can't get onto that train, you should have a number of buses to choose from.
One thing to keep in mind - you should try to get to Phitsanulok before the buses stop running to Sukhothai. They don't run all night. I think that the last one is at around 7:00, or so. I'd try to get there to catch the 6:00 bus just to be on the safe side. Buses DO stop running from Sukhothai to P-lok at 6:00 pm.
If you're stuck in Phitsanulok, do try to check out Wat Yai. The Buddha in there is outstanding!
