There is a developing story in Bangkok at the moment of a "potential terror threat". Yes, we know this is vague. We're blogging and following it on the Bkk blog here.
At the moment the only warning is from the US embassy and there are all sorts of tales flying around, the situation is best described as uncertain but developing.
We'll update you as we find out more -- enjoy your Friday the 13th.

aha. That's why it was possible to walk (as opposed to shuffle) past the tourist stalls between Nana and Asok earlier this evening!

I got an email from my Embassy this morning saying that the US and Australian Embassy's both had warnings of terrorist attacks so I should be careful if I go to BKK. However, they themselves were not sending out a warning, just an update.

Have just added another update to the Bangkok blog bringing this up to date -- it seems the Thai govt is either lying or making it up as they go -- I'm not sure which is worse. Seems there are two suspects on the lam in town.
We're not changing our plans (I'm flying up to Bangkok in a coupla hours) but we will be keeping a very close eye on developments.
Cheers

Note that the guy had been in BKK for a long time and that foreign governments providing the tips have been maximizing any possible threat for use to bully/elbow into local gov/business operations. That and the possible effect on the tourist industry may help explain the reaction.
