I am bringing two of my sons --22 and 27- - to Thailand with me in December. They want ti spend a few days at the beach. Is there a city with a beach that I can explore as I do not like lying around all day. Vietnam has Hoi An and Nha Trang for example both excellent beaches and nice cities.

There are a handful. I've been to Chonburi, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla. These are all sizable towns, with beaches, where one could spend time exploring. Of these I found that PKK was the best of the bunch with Songkhla coming in second.
Of course, there are many smaller towns with beaches, but not much time would be required to check them out.
