I'm in Chiang Mai at the moment and want to sign up for a trek in the next few days...can anyone recomend any company's or areas to go...any feedback would be great!! Thanks,
Also, heading off into Laos in about a week and want to know if anyone has recently crossed at the Xui Huay border...has anyone done the slow boat and does anyone know how much it costs....any idea if a bus does this route...border to Luang Prabeng...
Thanks,
Meagan
This Trekking in Thailand story might give you a few tips on what to look for, though we don't recommend any specific operators. While Chiang Mai is the most popular base for treks, Pai and Mae Hong Son are also very popular -- in part because they are smaller places, closer to "the action"
There is no direct bus from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang - to do it by bus would take you via Luang Nam Tha and Udom Xai -- a long and circuitous trip. Boat is faster. faster still is flying -- there are direct flights from Chiang Mai to Luang Prabang.
For more tips on the slow boat, take a look at this thread on the messageboard.
