We are headed down to Trang from Koh Tao but would like to break it up one night. Looks like its a pretty long trek down to the Trang islands from Koh Tao. Any suggestions on where to stay for a night about halfway through? Been to Krabi before so possibly somewhere different off the beaten path?

This depends what route you take. Khao Lak may be a nice place to stop. You can get there by bus directly from Chumphon. If you go along the Gulf side then stop in Surat Thani, although I wouldn't really call it a nice town.

Khao Lak is not a town-it is 10s of kms of seaside with bungalows/upmarket hotels and resorts strewn along it without much of a centre. IF you want a real town-small, try ranong with its hot springs and 1day trips to Burma(psst!no visum-now you can say you have been there!
BTW-the faster way from Tao toward there is to take the ferry the other way to Surat via Samui. Via Chumphon you head for BKK.
