If anyone has done this, which is preferable, overnight to Surat Thani and then road transfer or stay on train to Trang and then go by road? Is there much difference in time. We don't need to be there too early in Krabi and then Ao Nang as we can't have our hotel till mid afternoon.

Hotels will near always let you in if the rooms are empty and cleaned. The prob with all those anxious prebookers is that they all use the same ones that then tend to be so full that you need to wait. The next hotel does not do webbookings and stands half empty.
Obviously, as trains are always late and slow here in TH-the bus from Surat is quicker. Try to avoid the tourist minivans-speeding and accidentprone.
In Trang you can board buses to Krabi (most go on to Phuket) either in front of train station or from the busstation a little onward-any guidebook has the details or just ask when there. There is not that much to see in Trang-but an hour walk or so might be worthwhile-it has a southern Thai/near Malat feel on it.

We might do the Trang trip and maybe have an hour or two there and then head down to Krabi afterwards, like you say its a place to take in after an overnight journey. Hmm, thanks for that.
