I'm a female traveling alone. The train from Penang arrives in Surat Thani after the last ferries to Koh Samui / Koh Penang, so I guess I will be needing a hotel for the night. Does anyone have any recommendations for hotels in Surat Thani? Any other safety tips would be greatly appreciated.

I was going to suggest Tapee Hotel (depending on your budget)which used to be approx 440bt for a fan room. But I see on the latest TF reviews and on their website that they no longer have the cheaper fan option, and it’sair con only for 550bt. What a pity!
The rooms are large, clean and very comfortable. It’s a standard hotel that doesn’t have anyreal atmosphere – but it’s safe, secure and comfortable. Staff are friendly enough and can help youorganise tickets, etc if you need it. It’sa 2-3 minute walk to the waterfront where the night market sets up and thenight ferry leaves from. (Taking thenight ferry to Koh Samui is the other option that you might want to consider, and save yourself the cost of a room for the night). Don’t quote me on this, but I think it was approx 700baht about 4 yearsago, and you got a mat on the floor to lie on (along with 100’s of others!).
If you prefer to stay the night, there will be other cheaperoptions that the Tapee. But if it’s inyour price range, then it’s a good option.

If your train doesn't arrive in time to grab the overnight boat to Koh Phangan which leaves around 11pm from Surat Thani (Ban Don Pier I think), then either the Tapee Hotel as suggested above or My Place:

which is close to the ferry pier also for the ferries the next morning.

I often stay at Phangan Guesthoue, which is run by the company that operates the bus/ferry combo with Raja ferry. But you may want to look closer to the train station as it will be quite late when you arrive.
Tappee is also good and in the past (before the price rise) stayed there quite a bit.

Wouldn't advise staying near the station, it's not that nice an area and there is very little on offer in the way of good guesthouses. There will always be a taxi or a tuk tuk or a pick up truck to pick up passengers getting of the train and usually there will be a few of you, so I would share with someone from the train and head into Surat Thani City itself.
