Hi folks,
I am just about to book flights to Thailand/Vietnam for 29 Oct 2012 and would appreciate some ideas from you guys on places to go. I have never been to either country before.
I am flying into Bangkok and from there I would love some ideas. I am travelling with my partner and whilst we do want some time in bars/clubs I really want to visit some of the islands for a bit. We would like to do this relatively inexpensive if possible.
In addition for my time in Vietnam I have the option of either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi and would like oppinions on which would be a better option.
Finally I am trying to fit all this into approximately 16 days so I don't have a whole lot of time.
I really appreciate any replies and would be forever greatful.
Many thanks
Dru.

I can only speak about the islands. If I was going at that time I'd head for the eastern Gulf islands - Ko Chang (big one) and its neighbours Ko Wai, Ko Maak and Ko Kud plus closer to Bangkok Ko Samet.
The eastern Gulf islands usually have wet season ending earlier than elsewhere - statistics and my experience indicate dry season has usuall kicked in by late October whereas it is still going or just beginning to trail off in the Andaman and is often at its worst in the southern Gulf.
There is nothing second rate about the eastern Gulf islands. I did a revisit in March and enjoyed them more than my just completed tour of the Andaman and southern Gulf. The eastern Gulf is also closer to Bangkok.
