Hi everyone, I'm sure this is one of those questions which is always asked, so forgive a novice like me asking it one more time, but does anyone know a cheap way to make calls to the UK from Thailand and vice versa?

Hi,
You want to get a true Intersim. The cost is about 150 baht but you can get that down to 100 if you have some good bargaining power. That comes with 50 baht credit on it so it is a good deal although sounds expensive to other sims. After regerstering this will cost you only 1 baht a minute to UK landlines and 6 baht a minute to UK mobiles. All you have to do is add 006600 to the start of the number before dialing. I would also recommend that you get a text message bundle or calls bundle if you are also looking to speak to people in Thailand on the phone as if you dont this can work out expensive too. All the details are online about the bundles and the international calling information is included in the sim pack when you buy it (and yes it is in english).
As far as i am aware it costs me nothing to recieve calls or texts from abroad on my thai number, so this should also save you some money if you can get people from England to call you.
There are lots of cheap calling plans from local sim card advertised but I just always use Skype - don't think you can get much cheaper than that. Wifi is abundant in Thailand so you could call from your iPhone, Touch, BB, netbook etc if you carry one or if not, from one of the numerous internet cafes. Calling Skype to Skype is free and you can call a UK landline from Skype for around a penny a minute. If you need to receive a lot of calls from the UK, look into a Skype number and calling plans so people can call you or people with a computer or wifi device in the UK can call you on a local sim, although Skype to a Thai mobile number is around 7p a minute. It's easy to set up a Skype account but would suggest you do this before you leave home for simplicity.
PS I don't work for Skype, it's just become one of my "must-have" pieces of travelling technology!

Great for calls to Thailand at 1.1p a min to mobiles. You have to register with them but you can pay as little as £1 upfront. They convert the number in Thailand to be recognised by your provider as a local number.

for UK - Thailand : subscription with skype is very cheap.
for Thailand - UK : I think True - Intersim is the cheapest. Which is 1 THB per Min. You can get that simcard at any phone store. Maybe even 7-11
