The Thai mafia will be happy you want to make them richer.

FMP - Did it, wouldn't do it again - what a tourist trap.

vipinsh,
please keep in mind that leonard and alt's combined age is well over 100 years old, so they will certainly have a different view of the FMP than most 20-something backpackers. to be fair though, i don't think the moon was completely formed when they were your age, so they never got to see a FMP when they were young.
okay, truth is i'm closer to their age than i am to yours i suspect, so i'm just having a little fun here. but i do wonder why the site's resident senior citizens feel the need to make negative comments about the FMP on nearly every thread that mentions it. go. be safe. have a wonderful time. sorry i won't be there to share it with you. cheers.

Hey vipinsh,
I'll definitely be down at FMP for New Years. I'm actually getting into Bangkok tonight to start my trip (super stoked) but I was just in Beijing and heard great things from all the backpackers I met who had been. I'm sure it'll be super easy to meet people, but feel free to PM me and I'll send you my email.

Who says we're not having a little fun too
A lot of older people like the FMP, I'm just not one of them.

"need to make negative comments "
Just posting the truth. Run by mafia and people die every year at these things. Why not tell the truth?

Is the FMP really any more run/shaken down by mafia than all the sedate upmarket venues on Phuket or Samui? I'd guess less.

I don't think the Upmarket guys are getting shaken down much enigmatic. They have money. If they didn't, they wouldn't be able to invest in upmarket real estate. And having money here means having the power to buy someone to kill someone and get away with it. The Mafia types in Thailand oppress the weak who can not defend themselves. They don't screw with rich people. Not if they want to go on breathing.

Hi Vipinsh & JustinC474, am planning to be in Ko Pha Ngan for NYE as well. Will PM you both now.
JustinC474 you mentioned you would be in the region prior to NYE on a trip,.. I am planning to start my solo backpacking holiday from Bangkok in November and spend Nov-Dec in Thailand-> Laos -> Vietnam -> Cambodia -> Thailand (NYE) and then onwards to Malaysia and Singapore. If you are in the region when I get there in November, maybe we can even meet up before NYE!
Have you guys done anything about the accommodation?
