i know not many people advise going to the full moon party but im travelling with my brother and its 1 of the things on his to do list, so...i was just wondering if anyone had any advice on where to stay and best way to get there....we will be going to the january fmp which is on the 26th, we have flights booked out from singapore on the 7th feb so dont really want to hang around 2 long after the party, do we have to stay on the island? do hostels have a length of stay policy around fmp nights? or would we w best staying in a hotel?

I've been there and I think everyone has to decide for himself. If you're looking for party and a lot of booze it is the place to go.
I would stay not directly in haad rin where the party happens, just a little outside or even farther and catch a taxi/boat to the party. There is something like a minimum stay required but just pick out some places and contact them. And by the way the island has much more to offer then the FMP so you can explore the rest of the island.
There are the Ten Commandments in the LP Thailand. Read them and be safe.

daniellegee, have you found any accommodation yet? I have started looking today, and am thinking it may well be too late to book anything in Ko Pha Ngan. Plus it looks like one would have to pay a lot more for not-exactly-stellar quality of accommodation. Staying a bit farther out and commuting to the party island seems a good idea..

Hi...no I haven't started looking yet, I was thinking of going to STA travel to see what they recommend I've heard they give good advice and sort accomodation for you, I think I will be staying a little out of the way and commuting to the fmp I think it's the best/safe option, I have a brochure from STA travel from when I booked my flights and they have some great hotels in there real cheap they look amazing and all state they are within reach of the fmp so upgrading to a hotel rather than a hostel maybe an option they range from £18 to £38 a night and look unbelievable for the price

You don't need to worry about your accommodation there are a lot of cheap and safe place to stay there like hostels or a lodging houses. Best to stay is around the city and there are many cheap place there to stay.

I spotted a couple of hostels (BANG!) on Haad Rin, the FMP beach itself. They are not the cleanest and deffo not the cheapest, but for £15-£17 a night for a minimum of seven nights, yes, we can get accommodation on the Full Moon party island.
I am looking to see if there is anything cheaper on Koh Samui, the island close to Koh Phangan, and taking a ferry there and back for the parties.
Depends on our budget really. Comes to around £115-£118 ish for my intended travel dates (26th Dec - 2nd Jan) in those hostels in Koh Phagnan.
What say?

Has most accomodation you've looked at around the area had a minimum length of stay around fmp nights? We are on a time scale...the fmp is January 26th and we have to be in Singapore for feb 6th with things to do inbetween

Check out this website for the dates: http://www.fullmoonpartykohphangan.com/

There are FMPs on 25th, 28th and 31st looks like. All other days are going to be banging too. I hardly think there's a "party crowd" or "weekend crowd" in that place. Everyday is a weekend and everyday is a party!
All the places I've looked at need at least 7 days minimum stay. I'll spend one day tomorrow looking at Koh Samui, and then will go in for a booking. Everyday places are being taken up, no point waiting I think. It's not like there's going to be more places later

That is an idea RiniRabbit, Thank You
The thing with Koh Tao is that it takes longer by boat to get there. And have no idea if the fast Jet Boat ferry is available, like it is from Koh Samui. Am thinking now, how much the idea of getting home after an all night bender on the beach will appeal to me, if my "home" is a good hour or two away and involves waiting for a boat (and getting to and from the pier on either side)

I will look into it nevertheless, Thanks

..and here is some information from a couple of threads I have running on TripAdvisor on the subject:
http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g303907-i9842-k5801605-NYE_2013_2013_Ko_Pha_Ngan_Accommodation_too_late-Koh_Phangan_Surat_Thani_Province.html
http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g293918-i7560-k5805277-NYE_2013_2013_Ko_Pha_Ngan_FMP_commute_from_Koh_Samui-Koh_Samui_Surat_Thani_Province.html
Seems we either get the hostel direct on Haad Rin or stay a little further out on Koh Phangan itself, and use local transport to get to and from the beach party scene.

Don't do what I did and stay right on the beach ! Unless you don't want to sleep for days on end.

I am put up at Green Peace Bungalows. A 10-15 minute motorcycle ride to Haad Rin beach on one side and Thong Sala on the other. It's right on a quiet beach, a peaceful non-party one! Got a great deal for a fan room with double bed for 550 THB a night. Woohoo!!
