Can anyone recommend a good place to stay on Koh Phangan for the Half Moon Party January 18th for two single 27 year males? Price can be from $5-$50 per night. Do we need to book it in advance?

Have a look at travelfish's booking site and failing that Google for Lighthouse Resort,Leela Resort (cheapies) and Coco Hut, Sarikantan (more upmarket) on Leela Beach, a quiet one maybe 400m from Had Rin main street which is only a few km with frequent transport to Ban Tai (or is it Ban Kai?) where the half moon parties are held.
There is so much accommodation in the Had Rin/Ban Tai/Kai area I doubt you need to book for half moon.

If you don't want to stay far the party Ban Kai is ok.
But Thong nai pan beach is nice to stay but far from the party place.
