Hi all
I've just realised it is a 3.5 hour boat ride... I land in surat at 3.30pm, is it going to be possible to get a boat to the island on the same day?
Any help would be great!!

Depending on where exactly you're coming from (Surat Thani town vs. train or bus station or airport out in Phunphin district) it's about 60-80km to the Don Sak pier so allow about 90 minutes for this. The last ferry to Ko Phangan is usually at 6pm so you should be OK.

no worries alt. you got the discussion going.
i was thinking that if the OP is flying into surat thani airport, then there will be a transport desk selling combo bus/ferry tickets to the islands, including phangan. i'd be surprised if the flights and ferries weren't timed to run together.
there also used to be the night boat option to phangan departing late. if that is still running, you could have a nosey around town before catching the boat. worst case is you'll wind up spending the evening exploring surat thani before catching the first boat over to the island in the morning. that might be a good choice if you haven't pre-booked accommodation. that way you won't be searching for a place to stay after dark, and will have first choice of the newly vacated rooms in places that don't pre-book.
please let us know how it works out, how much the transport costs, etc. cheers.

The night boats do still operate from Surathani to the islands - yes.
