Hello,
I am heading to Koh Lanta tomorrow from Trang and have a night booked at the Thai House Beach Resort. I don't like to book places in advance but I called a few places on Long Beach on Lanta that either said they were full or had expensive (1000 baht) bungalows. I got a fan bungalow at the Thai House Beach Resort for 700 baht and will look around when I get there to see if I can find anything else.
I have to be back in Bangkok on February and was looking for ideas on where to head from Koh Lanta (in case I don't decide to stay there the whole time!) One idea was to head to Koh Lipe and spend some time in the islands around there (Koh Bulon Lae) and another idea was to head to Koh Jum and then maybe Phang Nga Bay, Koh Phi Phi... I am looking for some beaches with really clear water (and some nightlife) which is what attracted me to Koh Lipe but would ideally like a bungalow in the 500-800 baht range (not sure this is easy during high season in the Andamans). Any ideas on where to head after Lanta?
Thanks,
Matt

Ko Jum/Phangna Bay/Lipe would be a good combo from the point of view of transport cost and time (I'd do Phi Phi after Lanta and go to Phang Nga via Krabi) but except for Phi Phi the other two aint extactly known for really clear water or night-life. Any island close to the mainland won't have very clear water.
So yeah, your idea of Lipe is a good one. Pattaya beach there is Lady Tezza's favourite precisely on account of the clear water with fishies and bits of coral in the swimming enclosure adjacent Varin resort. You are right in the difficulty of finding accommodation under 1000 in the Andaman these days - but have a look at travelfish's associated Agoda booking site - I saw several joints when booking for early March. Failing that I reckon Porn resort on Sunset Beach will always have their overflow tents for busy times.
Two other islands with clear water on the way down to Lipe are Ngai and Kradan. But accommodation here will be over 1000 unless you take one of Camping's tents on Ngai. This place tends to get a bit lively at night but apart from that these two islands are kinda like Bulon, Adang and Taratao near Lipe in that they are more laid back and you will have to rely on the luck of having some lively guests wherever you are staying.
