I'm a single american woman that will be travelling around Thailand at the beginning of Sept. 07 and need help figuring out where to go and how many days to spend in each. I want to go up north but some people say Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and some are saying Mae Hon Song and then I want to go down to the beaches but I'm not sure where to go. At the beach, I don't want to party but I want to hang out on the beach and maybe do some interesting things and also check out the markets and shopping and whatever else anyone can suggest. I'm confused which island to go to. Quiet is fine with me but not touristy. I will be alone so I want to be safe. Can anyone please help me figure out how many days for each. I have 14 days in all to travel and I will be flying in and out of Bangkok. Also I would love hotel/guesthouse suggestions

Hi, I loved Ko Sukorn when I was there just a few months ago. I was supposed to stay a week and ended up there a month! Definitely not touristy. Not much there but a few "resorts" and 3 small villages. The locals are amazing and will smile & wave eveytime you go by.
I stayed at Sukorn Beach Bungalows for the 1st 3 days then moved over to Cabana for the rest of my stay and have never felt so welcomed. They do have a website and Sam is more than helpful in arranging your arrival to the island and the resort.
I travelled as a solo woman and always felt safe there.
Not much in the way of markets except geared towards the locals. But they were great fun for buying small things and interacting with the locals. I can't say enough good things about my experience there.
The island is out of Trang if you need a reference point. There is an airport there but I had time to catch the afternoon overnight train from BKK to Trang and arrived by late morning. You can be on the beach by 2pm.
If you need any specific details I'd be happy to help.
    Happy travels

I'm at a similar stage to you in planning my trip.

I have read a hell of alot and have decided on flying from bangkok to Koh Samui then traveling to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao all of which are a short boat trip from one another.

The added benifit is that if you don't like a particualr island you can move on with ease.

For a breif sum up of the 3 islands based on what i have read (anyone who has actually been please feel free to correct me)

Koh Samui - nice resorts, more commercialised of the 3 islands.

Koh Phangan - Location for the full moon parties so can get busy around those times, but easy to hide on other part of the island if partying is not your thing.

Koh Tao- Beautiful island with clear waters where scuba divers come the world over to dive. Personaly this is where i am really looking forward to as we are going to do our PADI training to learn to scuba dive here.

    hope that helps!!!

well.. i think i could help you...

i'm not sure about the weather on september.. but if u wants to go up to north , i would suggest during cold season. i was there on december... it was nice weather.

Chiang mai : nice cozy place... night market are awesome there... there is a food court where a band will be playing at night. it's in the middle of the night market. then you should go for a 3 days 2 nights tour ( ask the guesthouse for more information ). trekking is very famous in the north.
    elephant rides too.
I was there for a week . it was a great week for me.

    Thai Islands,
Koh Samui ( eastern region ) - nice and cozy place. Me and my bf loves that place so much. There is a really nice place for you to watch the sunsets. they call it 'sunset peak'. Beaches are nice.. food aren't that nice but the music and tables are all by the beach , where u can lie down on the pillows and stare at the sky.

Phuket / Pattaya - nightclubs. famous for prostitutes. not a place you want to go. trust me.

Koh phi phi - nothing much to do there. lots of tourist.

Koh Chang - nice beach. written one of the thai's best beach in one of the guide book. deserted beacuse it's near to cambodia. Lots of weed activities there.

other famous islands like koh samui , phangan , koh tao are all written above. =)

If you want more details such as accomodation , trains , buses , food , nightclubs , you can ask me .

i'll be glad to help. =)

i'm going to backpack with my bf next month. We are going to Trang Islands. It's not a famous beach but it's developing there. It's best to go there before it gets more hectic. =)

    Enjoy ya trip!
    Ciao !
