I've read that you can cross here into Myanmar for the day as a good way to renew your Thai visa. Is this still available to do or are there any other similar options in that area?

Hi dnuts,
It is my understanding this border canot be used for visa run purposes. One option is Mae Sot (forther to north on the border with Burma). Here is a report from a recent run:
"Visa runs can be done here with little hassle. Once you check out of Thailand and cross the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, you’ll be charged 500B to enter Myawaddy, Burma. The immigration office will keep your passport and give you a receipt, which you trade for your passport on your return trip. Use common sense, don’t give your passport to anyone other than the immigration officer and be wary of strangers approaching you."
