Hi there,
Three of my friends and I are staying in a hotel in the Mai Khao section of Phuket for a week in August and I was wondering what some great day trips would be? I love kayaking and snorkelling and my sister loves diving...any island area we shoukld hit? Any out of the ordinary day trips inland?
It's my first time there and I'd like to feel all aspects of the culture during my time in that area.
Staying at the JW Marriott by chance? There's not a lot up on Mai Khao except for beach, more beach and a bit more beach after that. In August the weather in Phuket can be a bit iffy and the seas in particular a bit rough. Mai Khao is a long and very exposed beach, so I don't expect you'll be doing too much kayaking out from the resort. Phang Nga bay on the other hand has some excellent kayakking opportunities -- any travel agent will be able to help you in that regard, or we'd suggest you contact John Gray Sea Canoe.
As far as day trips are concerned, there is a national park at the northern end of Mai Khao, though, unless you have a special interest in mangroves, it is a pretty low key affair. Otherwise, hire a car or motorbike and visit a different beach every day -- that's if you can tear yourself away from the resort.
