Solo female traveller looking for an island around Christmas

  • DTQ

Hello, everybody. I posted this over at the lonelyplanet site and a user there suggested I ask over here. I guess you guys are supposed to be the most knowledgeable folks around. Hopefully that's the case!

    Here's the question I'd posted:

"First of all, before I get pm's or something, I am not the solo female lol. Just looking up some information for her. She'll be in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 22. Has a flight out of Bangkok on Dec 29. Was trying to figure out where she could go for a few days in between. Was hoping to relax on an island for a few days. Would Phuket area be good? Some place else better? She's not a huge partier, she'd be ok with some peace and quiet. But she's not totally opposed to encountering some westerners either. Basically, she's looking for a not totally isolated, safe place to spend a few days between KL and Bangkok. And, of course, some place that wouldn't be so busy that she couldn't get a room.

Thanks a lot for your help, everybody. Happy travels."

How is your friend getting from KL to Bangkok?

One island option I could recommend is Ko Samet, about 4 hours by bus from Bangkok. It's got a nice combination of quiet and party options, and draws a fair amount of westerners, including expats living in Bangkok.

It can get pretty busy on weekends, particularly since December 23 is election day this year and December 24 looks to be a holiday, but midweek is usually fairly calm.

Your friend might be particularly interested in staying in the Ao Hin Khok or Ao Phai areas of the island.

If your friend is travelling overland between the two, then I'd suggest looking into the islands off Trang on Thailand's west coast -- in particular Ko Muuk -- could be just what she's looking for.

Thanks for your help, everybody. She's going to look into some of your suggestions.

To answer exacto's question, she's open to different means of transportation getting between KL and Bangkok. But isn't it true that it's a somewhat turbulent climate in northern Malaysia/southern Thailand? I think someone had told her to avoid trains and buses in that region if she could.

Thanks for your help on all of this. She'd be here asking the questions herself, but she's already in northern Thailand and her access to computers is limited. We were hoping we could narrow down the search here, so when she did get access to the internet, she would have a narrower list to choose from.

    Thanks again.

    Happy travels.

Another idea would be Laoliang Island, also one of the Trang Islands. Safe and private and a lot of fun.
