Heading from Cambodia to Thailand for beach time
9th December, 2007
My husband and I are planning a busy trip through Vietnam (2 weeks or so) and then about 4 days in Cambodia to see PP and SR. We would like to end our holiday with some relaxing beach time in Thailand. We are not sure if we should head to Koh Chang as we can access it overaland...or, if it is actually easier for us to fly out of SR to Bangkok and then on to whichever island we choose. Any suggestions? Roughly how long will it take to travel from SR to Koh Chang? We only have 5 or 6 days for this part of our vacation and really want to relax and enjoy some gorgeous beach. We are looking at mid budget range. Not in a party zone.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Overland from Siem Reap to Ko Chang takes a full day of travel as follows:
share taxi to border
tuk tuk to bus station
bus to Chanthaburi
bus to trat
songtheaw to ferry pier
ferry to island
songtheaw to beach of your choice.
If you leave Siem Reap too late, you'll need to overnight in Trat.
If you fly to Bangkok instead then you should be able to get a connecting flight to wherever you're headed same day.
In either case, if all connections go smoothly, you should be on the beach be the end of the day.

If you opt to fly to Bangkok, then to an island destination, look into flying to Trang and going out to Laoliang Island or Lipe Island. They are incredibly beautiful, not overcrowded. You can even take a ferry between the two islands to get a chance to see them both. Plus, from Laoliang, you can take a longtail to Takieng Island and from Lipe to Taratao Island.

My suggestion is hang out in Cambodia for quality beach time in Sihanoukville. Not far from Phnom Penh, then can take boat when done to Koh Kong--cross Hat lek border to Trat and still have couple of days for Koh Chang if you ever decide to leave Sihanoukville. Check travelfish's and canby publications websites for it and decide for yourself.

I agree with the Laoliang-Lipe-Taratao idea. This is the best island combo in thailand these days. the Tiger Line ferry makes it very easy as well now.
Fly to Trang; transfer to Had Yao pier, boat to Laoliang, stay a couple of nights, one hour boat to Lipe, longtail to Taratao when you like etc.
Laoliang Island Resort can arrange pick-up from the airport to Had Yao if you like. Just get in touch with them

You simply don't have enough time. 4 days for Cambodia? You've got to be joking. You'll need at least that amount of time for Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. As Jim said stay in Cambodia and do your beach thing down in Sihanoukville.
