Don Muang Airport/Train station

My friends and I are travelling from Chiang Mai to Phuket and looking for the cheapest way to do so. I'm looking into the option of taking a sleeper train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok and then getting a flight to Phuket from BKK.

I've noticed the sleeper train stops at Don Muang at 8am, and there is a flight from Don Muang airport to Phuket at 9.20am. If anyone has been to Don Muang can you please tell me if the airport terminal and train station are close to each other and whether we'd be able to make that flight or not? Thanks!

The train station is right outside the airport. All you have to do is cross the pedestrian bridge there and you'll make your flight with time to spare - if the train is on time. Good luck.

I'd be worried about missing that flight to Phuket after taking the overnight train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. If the train arrived at the Don Muang train station on time, you'd have plenty of time to walk across the bridge to the airport and check in for your flight. But that is a big if, since it seems that the overnight trains are rarely if ever on time anymore. I'd hate to see you sweating out the last few hours of this train trip knowing that you'd already missed your flight.

Is there a later flight to Phuket out of Don Muang that you can book?

An alternative might be to just fly the entire way. That would likely be two flights, one from CM to BKK and another from BKK to Phuket. But at least you'd have the best chance of arriving in Phuket when expected. Plus, there are so many discount air carriers in Thailand now flying exactly these routes that you have a very good chance of getting a fare that wouldn't be all that much more than the train anyway.
