Just came back from a ( shortened ) visit to Thong Nai Pan Yai on Kho Phangan, and I am warning anyone thinking they can have a peaceful, relaxing visit at that beach, that they will be sadly disappointed. Don't be fooled by the publicity blurb. For several nights a "disco" bar in the middle of the beach was playing music so loudly till 3am that I couldn't sleep, even with earplugs. After that, the inconsiderate people in nearby huts playing loud music, followed by the yahoos returning in a drunken, loud manner at 5am put paid to any hope for sleep. When I complained to the hotel staff, all I got was indifference; money more important than customers! As for the day, unmuffled motorboats coming and going, plus jet skiis visiting from Noi put paid to any hope of relaxation.
I also found the environment to be very bad with rubbish everywhere in the village behind the beach, and the villagers seemed to be very hostile towards "farangs", unlike most places I have visited in Thailand.
After 6 days, I did something I've never had to do before in over 12 years of travelling in Thailand, and I quit the beach early.
Must say that I don't understand why people want to turn such an attractive beach into a clone of Hat Rin. Isn't it enough that one beach has been completely ruined, and will they not stop till all the beaches have gone the "party" route? Well, I'll never go back there, nor will anyone I speak to.
