Any helpful tips on guest houses or hotels from anyone who has recently stayed in Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai/ Phayao ) would be gratefully received.

In Chiang Mai my favorite guesthouse is Hollanda-Montri. Am and Lucus are great host. they have their own Tuk-Tuk. Call before the train gets into town and you will be picked up at the station. They have added greatly to the establishment, in-house food and a hottub, on the river a few minutes from the "night market"

P.S. Check out their friends list for Chiang Rai.

I recently stayed at Sri Pat Guesthouse , which is a Flashpacker type place , and thought it was well worth the 800 baht a night .

Last year I stayed at CM Blue House - a double room, private bathroom, fridge and tv all for the unbelievable low price of 350 baht! The owners were really friendly as well, and location is fine.

I've stayed at CM Blue House as well - really friendly, close to many things, a twin fan room for 300 baht a night. I'll be back!
