I am in two minds whether to change a booking in BKK as I've recently read that Ratchadapisek
is close to some red light type bars. anyone any advice??

Well Ratchadapisek is a long road, but a considerable stretch of it is awash with massage parlours, escort bars and what not. It's easy to get out of there by the subway, but I wouldn't consider it as one of Bangkok's better areas with kids in tow.

But there are some great hotels there. I like the restaurants around there also. There are the dodgy massage parlors, but everything is behind closed doors, unlike the more lurid 'western' bar areas.

The traffic noise and fumes wouldn't make it my first choice either....even worse than Sukhumvit IMO.

To be honest there are far better and more convenient areas to stay in bangkok. Unless you want to be near the night clubs of Ratchada (Bali, Dance Feaver etc..) I wouldnt really recommend this area with or without kids.
But I dont think the 'redlightish' bits would be a problem.

Try Silom, Pratunam, Banglampoo, or Suhiumvit.

I don't have kids, but I've seen kids in at the New Siam 2 Guest House on Phra Athit Road. That area is close to the river, is a stone's throw to Khao San Road (which does have some good restaurants). The New Siam 2 seems pretty 'kid friendly.'

Another option in the Banglampoo area is the Royal Hotel. Although in need of some remodelling and new carpets, kids have a pool available to them. The included breakfast is pretty nice. And it's right across the road from the Sanam Luang (Pramain Ground) where kids can run all over. It is within sight of Wat Phra Keow and also reasonably close walk to a river pier. The Royal is pretty accomodating of well-behaved kids.
