hi Alison,
Sorry to disappoint, but I've just asked the lady in the internet cafe (on Samui) and according to her, the first boat from Haad Rin to Samui doesn't leave there till 09:40am and from Thong Sala not till 10:00... so sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you'll be needing to overnight in Samui before getting that 10:00 am flight.
However... I'm sure that there used to be a 7am boat that went from Haad Thian (a bay north of Haad Rin) which stopped at Haad Rin then continued to Samui, in which case that may work for you (would still be a tight connection) - however as I'm on Samui at the moment and the lady here has no idea what I'm talking about, you'll need to wait till I get to Ko Pha Ngan (in about a week) and I'll suss it out for you.
Unless of course, you're flying out tomorrow in which case you should let me know and I'll meet you for a beer ;-)

Hi Somtam!
Thanks so much for checking that out for me! We'll be in Samui for 6 days later in the month and then Phangan for 3. Well that was the plan. It would be great if we could get a 7am boat. If we have to go back for a night, I suppose it's not a big deal!
