What are any of your suggestions about vaccinations for Northern Thailand? We will be in Thailand for about 22 days, and only in the North for about 10 days max. However, in that time, we are unsure where we will be--probably stay to some of the more "touristy" rural areas (Mae Hong Son, Pai, Chiang Rai), but will definitely do a 2-3 night trek and do not want to be limited in where we can go once we're there. Since we have gotten most of the basic vaccines, my biggest question is about the Jap. Encephalitis vaccine. Cost is not an issue, since our insurance should cover it, but because I have heard there is a higher-than-normal incidence of side effects to the vaccine, I am reluctant to get it if it is not necessary for our trip.

Any suggestions on this from people who have gone or people who went for such a short time and got the vaccine anyway? By the way, I've read the official sites, so I know the official suggestions--more interested in personal advice or experience. Mostly, I'm not sure what is counted as a "rural" or "jungle" area for purposes of the JE vaccine. Thanks.
