Hi,
We are finalising our trip and we will be in Thailand from the 5th December (2008) until the 7th January.
We're planning on going up to Chang Mai and then coming back down to Bangkok for around the 20th December - our dilemma is whether to spend our time from this point onwards on Ko Phagnan and then moving towards the Western islands after Xmas OR to fly straight down to Krabi and stay around this area.
Now the other dilemma is money! Things look rather expensive in Krabi compared to Phagnan and we must stay in budget accomodation to stay on Budget.
Either way we plan to eventually fly out of Phuket to Kuala Lumpur.
Any advise relating to the best option would be great - thanks in advance!

mark, if you look at TRAVELFISH'S excellent interactive weather map you will see that the Phangan area's wetter period starting in Oct does trail into Jan - however by late December rain is usually trailing off and there is lots of sunshine - the fact that Xmas-New Year is PEAK high season says weather is not normally a problem - people will not come if the weather is iffy.
It's peak high season in Krabi too of course - accomm prices do tend to be higher but if you check TRAVELFISH'S bungalow reports for places in Ton Sai and upper East Railay places like Railay Cabana and Highland you may find cheaper alternatives. There have always been cheap places on the extension of Noppharet Thara beach (Hat Ton Son) across the small river from the NP headquarters - but I read recently that the NP has put a 200 entry fee on this region so I don't know what is going to happen to places like Andaman Inn.
There are cheaper islands in the Krabi area - like Ko Jum or Ko Yao Noi. Pretty nice places to spend some time. I have a fair bit of info on these in the link below. With over 2 weeks there is no reason why you can't combine Phangan with Krabi or one of the others, or combine Krabi with one of the others.
