My friend and I are staying at Charlie's Huts currently (June 2006). They are tearing the place down (some have already been demolished) and the guy at the desk told me they will probably be closed by the end of the month. The Bangkok owners apparently want to tear it down and build a place they can make more money.
Say goodbye to the last cheap affordable place on Chaweng!

Yeah Charlie's Huts is about to go. It is being replaced by an Amari Resort. Amari have long had a stake in the block of land Charlie's sits on and one of the reasons this hadn't happened earlier was one of the family members felt very strongly that the place should be kept as is -- he died (last year I believe) -- and the ball started rolling pretty much from then.
Shame to see it go, but there are other cheapish places towards the north end of Chaweng -- our update is being edited at the moment and should be on the site in the next few days

Cheap and Chaweng do not belong in the same sentence!
