I have to pick between going to Chiang Mai and taking a river trip to Chiang Rai or going to Kanchanaburi and venturing to Suphanburi. I would appreciated suggestions on what you would do with a week, in August...I know it is a short amount of time! Thanks.

Do you mean Sangkhlaburi? If so I'd go with that over doing the Kok River trip out of Chiang Mai.

i think this is a really hard question to answer, because i'm not sure why you need to pick between exactly those two options (apart from having only one week of course). what kinds of things do you like to do?
kanchanaburi is an excellent place to hang out for a week, and there are lots of outdoors adventure type things to do. quite a few guest houses have rooms right on the river too, and, as somtam says, it is a great gateway to sangkhlaburi (suphanburi isn't exactly a tourist mecca, so if you really are heading there, i'd pick almost any other option ;).
with the kanchanaburi/sangkhlaburi option, you could also sneak in a trip to ayutthaya, which is a fab place to see. cheers.
