I will be traveling from Phnom Penh to Bangkok end of Oct. Which will be a better place to spend the night, Trat or Ko Kong? Any hotels to recommend? I will be going budget. Thanks.
Both are pretty nice little towns. Personally I maybe prefer Trat for its laidback atmosphere. Guy GH and Ban Jaidee (listed on this site) are cheap, good places to stay.
Trat Pros - You'll have a choice of some great little guest houses, an excellent night market and, as mentioned above, a really nice ambiance.
Trat Con - You'll have to wake up early if you want to catch the ferry.
Personally, I think that getting up earlier is a small price to pay. Trat is a really nice spot that's worth at least one night, if just for the "hoi tohd" (fried mussels with egg and sprouts) in the night market.
Unless you're keen on catching the early ferry to Sihanoukville, stay in Trat.
Koh Kong is a sleazy little town and the guesthouses are often in cahoots with the scammers at the border crossing. As far as I know, accommodations are either in cheapo guesthouses with questionable security or at the hotels near the casino.

I don't know Ko Kong but I'd recommend Trat anyday as a stopover town. You may even want to stay longer if your itinerary allows it. Accomodation is cheap but not cheapo and the market is a great place to spend half a day. And if you're intending to go to Ko Chang, Ko Kut or Ko Maak, there are regular sangthaews to the pier at Laem Ngop.
