Greetings everyone!

I was curious if any of you had any suggestions on the best markets to hit up in Bangkok. I know there is some weekend market? Where is it and what is it called? Also, any neighborhoods or areas with good CHEAP market shopping would be good to know as well.

And if you have any recommendations on good/cheap places to stay near Khao San or Ratumburri, that would be great. Thanks so much for you help!

What's cheap to you?

I think that the flower market, Talad Pak Klong, just south of Wat Pho, is great. Mountains of flowers and fruit line the street, and there's a big, covered market area along the riverside right behind the flower vendors. There are good, cheap places to eat in there. It's a great place for photos. Not a place for clothes or souvenir shopping.

And it's worth taking the train from Thonburi to Mahachai (Samut Sakhon) to see the seafood markets (and eat!). Go in the morning and then come back after lunch. 10B for the train and it takes you through some pretty cool areas before dead-ending in Mahachai, right beside the meat market.

The weekend market is called chatuchak, i went there this year, it has over something like 2,000 vendors, and you can pretty much buy anything you want. Good food, cheap clothes, animals, jewelery stuff for your house and a lot of ssouvenirs.It was very interesting and worth going to. Just go to kao san road and ask a tuk tuk driver or a taxi to take you there, we took a taxi to the sky train station and went from there. It's not very far.. probably about 10 minutes.

In Thai its pronounced with a J sound - Ja-tu-Jak. (Talat Jaktujak) Something like that, might help you with a taxi.

Another tip, never get a taxi or tuk tuk from Ko san road. Walk around the corner and flag one down that is driving along the road. Dont get in taxi or tuk tuk that is waiting near a major tourist place anywhere in Thailand.

Also try Suan Lum Night Bazaar on Lumpini park and subway Lumpini station. Plenty of stuffs to shop around and it is opened until midnight. Most vendors can mention the price in English. But don't forget to bargain though.

If you are in BKK on a weekend, Chatuchak is a must!!! In fact plan your BKK time to make sure you can go, we always do that! To get there the easiest way is to get on the Skytrain, just go onthe northern line to the end... it is Mo Chit Station. The market is right there... just follow the crowds and get swept in. One thing... it is HOT in there... there is a lot to see and it will take all day! The sheds are claustophobic and crowded and crazy... you might want to just wander around the many outside stalls.
Other markets to see. There is also Suan Luan Night Bazaar which is very good. Also MahBoonKrong shopping centre at Siam has some market like sections on the lower and third and top floor. Plus it is airconditioned! Thre are lots of markets around. There is a good one near Baiyoke Tower as well. It has lots of good clothing and lots of other stuff.
There are so many markets it will be hard to choose!
