We are going to Khao Sok in the middle of August, leaving from Phuket. I found a bus that goes from Phuket across to Surat Thani but does that mean we can get off for the park? Do we need a transfer/switch of buses?
Do I need to go with a local tour group to explore the park or can I connect with the rangers at the park to get to the lake/tubing/kayaking?
Has anyone gone to the park this time of year?
Any accommodation recommendations that people have stayed at?
And then we am going onward to Ko Samui. Will there be buses that we can connect with at the park to go to Surat Thani?
We've got a researcher covering Khao Sok at the moment, so until his notes come in I'll answer as best I can...
As far as I know, the Surat Thani to Phuket bus does gopast the park entrnce, so you can just hop off and walk into the park.
You can connect with rangers in the park -- there's two sections of the park -- the lake and the waterfalls area -- each has their own accommodation.
August will have some rain, but the waterfalls will be great!
For accommodation notes, I'll wait for the notes for the researcher -- we should have them in the next few weeks.
To push onto Samui is just a case of walking out and flagging a bus heading to Surat Thani (or your guesthouse will be able to arrange transfers if you prefer).

I went to Khao Sok in June (opposite direction from you) and the bus does stop near the park. There are always touts waiting to give a ride if need be, or you can walk most places. I would recommend Our Jungle House to stay, I loved it there. They have treehouses on the river which are great, and the river was perfect for swimming.. The people were friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with most anything. Have a blast, Khao Sok is a wonderful place!
