The hotel is kind of out in the sticks. If you do get a hotel near the airport (not a lot of them) you will still have to pay for transportation from there into the city anyway or be bored crazy for all day.
From the airport you can take a free shuttle bus to the little bus station. From the bus station you can take a 35 baht bus into the city 45 minute ride +- 15 min. One bus will stop at the Oh Nut Skytrain stop, from there you can take a cheap meter taxi or the Skytrain further on. Only pay meter fares in Bangkok and the ride is cheap. Early in the morning for the return trip to the airport pay a meter taxi - fare 250 baht - 300 baht. I always stay in the city before a 0600 departure. Ride from Sukhumvit Nana Skytrain area or Siam area is around 25 - 40 minutes.

Even with a hotel nearer the airport you still have 15 minute -20 minute drive.
Agree go into BKK and stay overnight there. If the bus thing Sirhalberd suggests sounds too complicated just get the official airport bus (150B) or a taxi. If there are two of you the taxi is just as cheap or cheaper than the express airport bus.
There are airport buses to various parts of town including the Khao San Road area where you can find cheap accommodation (have a look around Samsen Soi 6 if you don't want to stay on KSR itself).
You'll need to get a taxi to the airport that early in the morning wherever you stay but there are lots about all night long. At that time in the morning there isn't much traffic so you won't need to use the toll road.

I'm getting a flight from Bangkok - Singapore at 7am. I'll have arrived from Luang Prabang at 9am the day before. I have a few questions:
Anywhere decent to stay near the hotel? i'm loath to spend much on a hotel when I'll probably only be in bed for a few hours.
Is there any way I could pull an all-nighter? What would I do all night? How do I get to the airport at night? When does the bus start?
