We just got back from Kanom and the surrounding beaches. We used travelfish exclusively for our info and would like to clear some things up.

1. It's easiest to get to Kanom from Surat Thani. There are mini buses that leave all day for 100 baht a person. If you pay anymore than this, you are being ripped off. You get on the bus in the back left corner of the old market in town.

2. There is only one guesthouse that is in a backpackers price range. It is in the town of kanom and called GoDood. Rooms with air run about 400 baht a night. Everything that is close to the beach is 1000 baht and up. The guy who owns GoDood is a nice guy and runs a clean place.

3. The only truly great beach is the beach furthest south. You take the road until it ends and then you are there. DO NOT attempt to hike to the beach they mention on here. The hike is well over 3 Km. AND the trail hasn't been used for a long long long time.

Thanks for the report back Spencer -- much appreciated.

What did you think of the beaches around the Khanom area? Somewhere you'd return to? It's always struck me as odd that an area so close to the piers to Samui are so undeveloped with regard to foreign travellers...

The beach farthest south, Thong Yee, was pretty exceptional. At the same time, it was a 20 minute motorcyle ride from Kanom. It would be closer if you were staying at one of the resorts on the beaches to the north.

Thong Yee was totally undeveloped except for a shabby little camping operation on the southern end of the beach.

Several conversations pointed to the fact that the whole area is being bought up by farangs. I'm betting it turns into a koh samet in a couple of years.
