Do it!
The 1355 from Thonburi takes 2.5 hours and is great fun compared to a bus ride through mainly ugly urban sprawl.
Only 100 bahts too!
Three Top tips in Kanchanaburi.
Hire a pushbike, get out of town and enjoy the scenery.
Get the non-aircon bus to Hellfire Pass and do the walk, or at least part of it. Then get the bus back to Namtok, and take the 1515 train back to Kanchanaburi - brilliant day out.
And do spend a few minutes visiting a war cemetary - very moving experience.

How could you not mention Erawan falls. Best falls in Thailand. 200 baht entry fee food and drink cheap. Can spend he whole day there, in Fact I have. google for some pics, Clean water. bit of a nibble by the fish but the one thing is the monkeys at the 2nd tier will snatch the food from your hand. quite funny actually.
