Hi. Planning to go to the elephant festival in Surin this year (November 21-23). Have heard that hotels charge double and triple their usual rates during this time. Anyone know of any affordable places to stay either in Surin or close by? I don't mind staying a bit outside the city and would in fact prefer that. Thanks.

I stayed at a place last year about 10 kilometers outside Surin. It was very nice. On a big lake. I can't remember the price exactly, but it was less than 500 Baht. It's run by an American guy from New York and his Thai wife. They only have a couple rooms, but good food and bikes to use. Tuk-tuks to town were about 100 baht. Hope that helps.
