Are there other things to do in lampang or is visiting the elephant training centre regarded as a day trip from Chiang Mai? I am having trouble finding detailed (or any) info about this.

Aside from the Elephant Centre, the other main attraction is Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, which, like the elephant centre, is miles out of Lampang town, and most often visited on a tour from Chiang Mai. It is a spectacular temple, but if you could see it in conjunction with a run through the elephant centre on a tour from Chiang Mai, then that's a pretty smart way to do it (as long as you don't mind doing tours).
I dunno what happened to the elephant centre write-up -- seems the Travelfish super computer swallowed it -- I'll dig it out and add it again next day or so.
