Is there an "unlost" paradise, with great snorkeling, close to Krabi?

We're heading to Krabi in mid-February, and have been looking at Phi Phi, but following our research are feeling that it's too much of a tourist trap. Any suggestions?

Close to Krabi, Ton Sai Beach (see our Railay Beach section) is a good budget haunt. You could also stay somewhere like Ao Nang and do snorkelling trips out from there to various islands.

The east coast of Phi Phi has a few uncrowded paradises and has good snorkelling by Thai standards off most beaches.
Check TRAVELFISH'S reviews of Toh Ko Resort (budget), Relax Bay (flashpacker) or the places in the Loh Bakeo and Laem Thong regions (midrange to high-end).

I would go to Chicken Island / Poda Island off the coast of Ao nang - krabi. They are close to the mainland and can be visted easily by long-tail boat each day.
Some of the most beautiful beaches around these islands.

i would just stay in ao nang somewhere and do daytrips. there are many great trips to do including chicken island, khlong thom hot springs/crystal lagoon, bor thor kayaking/caves, phi phi snorkelling etc
krabi town also has 2 markets, one on the river and one inland. the town is also charming with decent shopping.
there's also a muay thai stadium at nopphorat near ao nang.
if you stay on phi phi you are fairly limited to activities.
stay on the mainland and you have many activities but can also relax if you want.
check out yourkrabi.com for ideas and places to stay.

Thanks for the helpful information. Ao nang sounds like a good base from which to explore the islands and other activities. My wife isn't as committed to snorkeling as i am, so ao nang would be a good compromise with a variety of activities available. yourkrabi.com is chockful of ideas. Thanks again.

Ko lanta and a few nights on Ko Ngai is your spot.
Use lanta as a base - do a 4 island trip with capt sun: www.lantalongtail.com
and drop off at Ko ngai for a nite or two.
The east coast of KO lanta is great too... KO Nui, Bubu, Talabeng. Went there last season on a camp out.
