Hi,
I'm hoping to take a bus from Nong Khai to Chiang Mai as soon as I cross over the border but there's no "Getting there and away" segment on the Travelfish Nong Khai info. I'm assuming it has to be possible to travel from Nong Khai to Chiang Mai by bus but could someone verify that for me, please?
Thanks,
DL

Hi DL I have done a similar trip as I was heading to Sukothai, but this is pretty much the same route you need. If you have a look in the trip reports for Nong Khai to Phitsanulok I give a complete run down on how to do this.
Regards

Somtam,
Do you happen to know when that overnight bus to Chiang Mai departs from Udon Thani? Not sure we'll make it in time to catch it, and want to avoid spending the night in Udon.
Thanks,
DL

We're in Chiang Mai now - thanks for the help. We took the international bus from Vientiane to Udon Thani (80 baht) departing at 14:00, which arrived around 16:00 to station # 1. Then, we had to take a tuk tuk (100 baht) across town to station # 2 where we were able to catch a bus to Chiang Mai (526 baht) that departed at 19:30 and arrived in Chiang Mai after 09:00 the next morning. Long ride, but the bus (not VIP) was reasonably comfortable.
Happy to be back in Thailand, and got plenty wet today...happy new year!

Whoa, just read the "What the hell is happening in Thailand?" thread after posting the above message. That was the first I'd heard or seen of the protests. I didn't see any problems in Udon Thani 2 days ago, and I rode a motorbike all around Chiang Mai today but didn't see anything more than smiling people splashing water. Looks like a mess in BKK, during Songkran no less... Let's hope the army doesn't start using their guns.
Jai Yen,
DL
