I understand there is a northern crossing into Laos from Thailand at Chiang Khong. I read somewhere that the northern part of Laos is dangerous for travellers. As im going alone i was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is true or is it false.

Northern Laos dangerous for foreigners -- news to me. The northern crossing at Chiang Khong is a popular entrypoint to Laos -- I wouldn't worry.

There was a time about 40 years ago that this area was somewhat dangerous due to the number of illicit militias and drug traffickers operating there. But that time has passed. Drugs still move, but not with little armies attached to them.
