The trip takes 5/6 hours. The regular bus (not air-con) leaves a half dozen times a day --most in the morning. There's one morning air-con departure a day and I think there's a night bus as well, though I'm not sure about that.
The buses leave from Arcade Bus station -- tis a five minute tuk tuk ride from the train station.
i saw several buses and minivans being advertised for the trip to pai too. the cost ranged from 200 to 300 baht per person one way. if you'll be staying in chiang mai before heading off to pai, you'll have plenty of time to explore your options before selecting one and heading off. cheers.

A minivan takes a lot less time then a public bus, I think I paid about 210baht from a travel agency in Chiang Mai, QueenBee I think it was called, they'll pick you up from where you're staying. Took us just over 3 hours, with a 15 minute stop. Once you get into the mountains, the scenery is stunning. The minivan should drop you off in the main Street in Pai, Pai is a small place, so you'll be near guesthouses.
