try "beers" or "new hut" on lamai beach. "coconut beach" on lamai is a good choice too, as it is more central to the night life and has a better beach out front. expect to pay 500 baht or so for a room here.
for chiang mai, try "cm blue house" on moon muang road soi 6. it is a steal at 250 to 300 baht per night.

what woudl you recommend if i want somewhere not too hectic but near enough to the nightlife?
