can anyone recommend a hotel for a few nights in the khao san road area or right in the middle of the best area for nightlife & atmosphere.
we are on a backpacker budget so nothing to expensive please!
thanks :)

If you don't mind sharing a bathroom, Apple II Guest House and The Green House are inexpensive and in a good area (in a narrow alley where buses, cars, and tuk tuks can't go) about 5 min. walk from KSR, and 1 min. from the Phra Athit Pier.
They are not fancy, but they have good atmosphere and are good spots to meet travelers.
If one is full, the other is about 3m away on the other side of the alleyway.

I put a review about the place in here a couple of years ago, and someone else did one just a week or so ago ...

There's plenty of budget guest houses near to each other on Soi Rambuttri near Khao San you can check out. The 200-300 baht ones are pretty much variations on a theme and there's usually room at one of them unless its the height of high season. There's plenty of drinking and thousands of people milling around on the street and over to Khao San which is sort of a mix of Blackpool and Camden Market.

Hi, I wouldn't recommend staying in KSR even if you intend to spend your time there. It would be like going to a football match and camping on the pitch! :)
There are 1000's of hotels in Bangkok, many of them really good so I would have alook at something close to KSR but not init.

Hi, my house is in that area and I would recommend staying a bit away from Khao San Road and Rambutri Road. Right now Rambutri is as noisy as Khao Sany Road. Bad news is hostel or guest house target to backpackers are always exactly where night life is.
But good news is "There is a hostel just opened especially for backpakers or budget travelers on a road next to Rambutri Road and it's awesome! It is NapPark Hostel. You can see comments of their travelers reviews though the hostel website on pace "activity"

Thailand is my favorite spot and I always take my Bangkok accommodation near or off Khaosan Road.
