My mom is coming to visit, and needs to overnight in Bangkok, ideally somewhere near the new airport, as their stay is only about 18 hours. Any ideas what hotels are near the new airport? I haven't been yet, to check it out. Also, with less than a day in Bangkok, what would you recommend my mom and her husband do? Thanks so much!

I stayed at the Asia Airport Hotel on my arrival to Bangkok. I read really bad things about it so I went into it not expecting too much. But it was great! We were picked up at the airport and taken via a van to the hotel, the check in was really speedy and the room was clean and comfortable and reasonably priced. Also, its loceted near a skytrain station which means that she could easily get around for the few hours she gets to spend in Bangkok! For what to do in Bangkok there are a ton of things but you should get your mom to look into what interests here, theres lots of material out there!
It isn't near any of the main attractions, but it's very quiet and comfortable. There are some interesting neighbourhoods and markets in the area, though.
KT (mentioned by Tilapia) is closeish to the old airport, not the new one. For the new airport there's the Novotel Bang Na and the Royal Princess Srinakarin Hotel, both of which are pretty much cookie cutter mid-range hotels and both between US$60-70 a night. For something cheaper, they're better off to head into Sukhumvit.

I have stayed twice at Sananwan Palace Guesthouse during stopovers in 2007 & will definitely stay there again if I've ever in transit through Bangkok. It's about 20mins from new airport in Non-Peak Hour traffic and I was able to book via email. There is lots of info their website www.bangpli.com At 350 baht for basic aircon room, it was heaps cheaper than booking a dayroom at Louis Tavern at the airport.I used Sananwan Palace transfer service to/from airport and that was hassle free.(Guesthouse has a pool too!)

This place isn't too far. Probably a B200 taxi ride. It's a great spot, especially if it's only for an overnight ...
