I hoped a motorcycle taxi with one of the taxis drivers I play Thai chess with when in Bangkok. The driver didn't know where I wanted to go so as a joke I offered to drive. He asked if I had a license. Sure. I showed it to him and he said "you drive". So I drove the motorcycle and he was the passenger on the back. Can't tell you how many people were staring saying to themselves "what's wrong with this picture?"
it's the flip flops that make the thai moto-taxi driver outfit the fashion statement that it is.
when i was living in chiang mai and khon kaen in the mid '80's, i used to occasionally do the same thing with the tri-shaw pedi-cabs. it was a lot of fun and definitely made people laugh.
yeah, we know that. the joke is that the drivers wear the mandatory helmet but still often zoom around town on their scooters wearing flip flops. i've seen people welding in bangkok using proper head and eye protection but still wearing flip flops too.
it used to be that everyone who didn't work in an office wore flip flops in bangkok. but no mas. the town is all grown up now.

Were you also sleep-deprived, and wearing flip flops?

No I wasn't wearing flip flops. I have a reputation to maintain with the ladies, I can't be wearing that crap.

I still see tourists walking around BKK dressed like Somali kids, but I prefer something more GQ personally.
